Inside the Interview

  • Hear the questions behind a first home sale.
  • See how one family used a short rent-back.
  • Recognize that changing work can be a work in progress.
  • Make room for help when parenting and plans collide.
  • Have a backup when the moving plan changes.

Emily’s account reflects her 2025 circumstances and plans, not her current work or a guarantee about any home sale, rent-back, military move benefit, or business outcome.

Meet the Guest

Meet the Guest: Emily Johnson

Emily Johnson grew up in Georgia and moved to Maryland for a nursing position at Johns Hopkins. She and her husband bought their first home in Rogers Forge, where neighbors and family life helped make Maryland feel like home.

More about Meet the Guest: Emily Johnson

When Matt caught up with her in 2025, that home had sold and her family was preparing to return to Georgia. Emily was also building a wellness and beauty business and rethinking how work fit around motherhood. She talks candidly about late meetings, accepting help, and making a new start before every detail is settled.

Before a move with a lot in motion

Make room for the unknowns.

Emily’s story is one family’s experience. These prompts help surface practical questions to discuss with the people involved in your own plans.

  1. Where could dates stop lining up?

Put the sale, move, and next-home dates beside each other; note where a little flexibility or a short stay might matter.

  2. What is the backup if plans change?

Ask which costs or arrangements could shift, and who can help if a planned service or timeline falls through.

  3. Who can share the load?

Name the family responsibilities and moving tasks that could be shared, especially during closing week or late work hours.

A rent-back requires a clear agreement; confirm legal, financial, and military-moving questions with the appropriate qualified professionals.

What felt most uncertain about selling her first home?

How did a rent-back fit into the sale?

Matt says they negotiated a short, no-charge rent-back after the sale. That arrangement let Emily’s family stay in the home briefly while preparing to move, instead of adding another short-term move.

What kind of nursing work did Emily hope to keep?

What drew Emily to Arbonne?

What changed the family’s moving plan shortly before departure?

Emily says a government-shutdown-related uncertainty about the planned military move reimbursement made the family wary of paying movers up front. They planned to do more themselves and ask family and friends for help. This describes the 2025 situation, not current policy.
